Powder polymers—such as Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide (PHPA) and high-molecular-weight synthetic polymers (e.g., AMC CR 650™)—are specialized dry chemical additives mixed with water to form high-performance, low-solids water-based drilling fluids. They serve as the primary stabilizer, viscosifier, and shale inhibitor in modern deep foundation piling, water well drilling, and horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
CORE FUNCTIONS IN BOREHOLE CONSTRUCTION
Wellbore & Wall Stabilization: Forms a protective, thin polymer skin along the borehole walls. Binds loose sand and gravel together to prevent sidewall cave-ins without relying on thick, heavy clay filter cakes.
Clay & Shale Encapsulation: Coats reactive clay and shale formations. Prevents water hydration, stopping sticky clays from swelling, softening, dispersing, or seizing the drill bit and drill pipe.
Viscosity & Cuttings Removal: Provides shear-thinning viscosity: thins under rotation to reduce pump head pressure, but thickens when circulation pauses to keep rock cuttings suspended and lift them to the surface.
Lubrication & Fluid Loss Control: Reduces rotational torque and drag on the drill string. Seals micro-fractures in porous strata, minimizing drilling fluid loss into surrounding formations.
AMC CR 650™ is a powder polymer. Specifically, it comes in the form of dry, white, free-flowing granules (as seen packaged in the green 15 kg bucket in your image).
Form: Dry granular powder.
Chemical Type: High molecular weight polyacrylamide / acrylic polymer.
How It's Used: It is slowly mixed into fresh water using a high-speed agitator or hopper to dissolve and hydrate, creating a viscous drilling fluid.
Field Mixing Best Practices.
Add Powder to Water: Always sprinkle powder polymer slowly into a high-shear mixer or hopper filled with water. Never pour water directly onto dry polymer to avoid non-dissolved "fish eyes."
Water Quality & pH Control: Maintain water pH between 8.5 and 1 0.0 using soda ash. Treat hard water (calcium > 200)
